Hi everyone. I am wondering what would be the best method to install 3/4" unfinished black ash with no T&G on butt ends. The flooring is to be installed on the main floor of my home (bungalow with a finished basement). I have a 1" subfloor and the flooring will be laid perpendicular to the floor joists which are 2x10 on 16" centres.

The flooring has lengths up to 8 ft and is T&G except for butt ends. I just don't want to have any lifting or cupping at the butt joints. Maybe I do not need to worry but would like some opinons from those who have more experience than myself. Thanks

biggest problem normally is they are not very square and you could end up squaring them all up by hand. almost all pine flooring is sold that way, the side joints should keep it pretty well aligned and being 3" wide3 id say your safe to nail it just like any other floor.

What would be the best type of paper to use between the subfloor and flooring? There is a finished basement below. Thanks

Aquabar is the one I like the best because it doesn't' tear easily and sits flatter on the floor than 15lb black felt paper. Not a lot of places carry it so if you can't find it, 15lb felt is an acceptable substitute.

Home Depot carries Aquabar. In the hardwood flooring aisle. Good product..easy to use and clean..no odor although manufacturer's literature says there may be some. Around $20 for a 500 square foot roll.
