how do i go about installing a hardwood floor over an exsisting hardwood floor? install parallel or perpindicular? need some tips

First off you need to make sure the old floor is very secure.

Then you need to install it perpendicular to the existing floor.


Can you tear out the existing. I would think this would be a better solution.

I am installing 3/4" Bruce over existing hardwood in a bedroom and a living room. Running perpendicular in those 2 rooms will look ok, but not in the hallway that joins them. The existing hallway floor runs parallel to the wall. Seems like running the new floor left to right would look too choppy and waste a lot of wood. Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated.
