When we purchased our house new a few years ago they had installed Cannington 3/8" x 3" Engineered Hardwood in our Kitchen, Dining Room and Entryway. They put carpet in the attached living room and hallway. We want to tear up the carpet and install the same hardware that is currently in the dining room/entryway and living room. Where would be the best location to start? The Brown "planks" in the very crude photo below are the existing hardwood floors (and the direction they are run). The yellow are walls and the red is where we want to install new flooring. Where the current hardwood meets the carpet there is a perpendicular piece of wood that the hardwood butts up against.

My initial thought was to start running the new hardwood against the last piece that is in the kitchen and running it towards towards the. However the more i think about that it might be a bad idea since that piece is only about 5' long and i do not believe i would be able to keep the entire run to the other wall and into the hallway straight. So i could start off of the far wall (opposite the kitchen) and run it towards the kitchen, but i am not sure how i would ensure to have a full piece of wood to meet up with the piece in the kitchen by the time it they meet. Would measuring out from the kitchen to the middle of the living room to ensure there are no short pieces and then starting in the middle of the living room be the best option? Then putting a spline in and running the opposite way to the other wall?

Is there also a better solution for joining the new with the old? I assume the only real way would be to but them up against the current "threshold" (perpendicular piece of wood). I have seen online where people remove planks and weave in with the old but i do not think that would work well in this DIY scenario since the two weaved sections would have to meet somewhere on the opposite side of the wall in the middle.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions on how i can tackle this please let me know.

How about going diagonal? There you wouldn't have to stress on getting it to lay right with the kitchen.
