I want to install hardwood tread on an existing stair case. I do not want to top nail on the stair case if I do not have to. They are standard size (nothing custom or special about them) 42 in long. Would a urethane glue be sufficient to attach the treads to the pine casing, or should I use a finish nail. I would like to avoid screwing and plugging if I can.

If you have existing "rough" treads made from plywood, OSB, or solid lumber (2x12), then you can glue your tread down with a quality urethane adhesive like Bostick's Best. Don't use a water-based adhesive!. You may still need to spot nail with a few finish nails to hold the tread in place till the glue cures. Don't know what you mean by attaching to pine casings! Casings are the trims to door jambs!

Thanks, it is solid wood stair, obviously my non-expertise in the area shows!

Glue it with urethane, and use brad nails right at the back of the tread to hold it. The riser board will cover the nail heads.

Start at the bottom and work your way to the top.
