The stringer appears to be oak and some of the spindles look like oak but the spindles at the top look like pine. Either way,it's going to be a nice stair case. I would save it for sure.IF you are going to pull all the spindles , it would also be a good time to re finish if that is something you want to do.

Yes I sure do plan on saving it. Question...to refinish the stringer and spindles what is involved? Is it difficult to go for a different finish/varnish/color? My wife and I really like a oak hardwood floor by the color of ameretto which would not match with the current finish.

Any ideas?

The pine railing will be tricky to work with .It is a very different wood from oak as far as color and character .One technique I picked up from a faux painter is to tint shellacs and urethanes to achieve colors rather than trying to use stains directly on the wood.

Staining pine is always a pain in the butt so if you simply seal it with a shellac or urethane , you can then make your own tinted finish to get the color you want and this gets you around the blotchy look of typical stained pine. I use trans tint dyes which I purchase from www.woodcraft.com They have some great yellow/brown variations that you can make a lot more colors from.

 I'm curious as to how you know from the pictures that some of the spindles are oak and some pine?
