I want to glue down 1/2" engineered oak OVER existing 1" particle board stair treads.....

Can I do this over particle board, what will happen if I do ??
If part. board is not good substrate, can I put down 1/4" ply over that and then glue my flooring to that ??

Thank you very much

You have been all over the internet asking this same question. When you don't hear what you want to hear, you go to the next message board, asking the same question, like your wanting someone to say yes, go ahead.

As a professional. I cannot recommend hardwood installation over or sandwiching particle board. PERIOD!

It is your house and your money, to do what ever you wish.

I'm all over the place to get more than one opinion. There might be a better chance of getting responses if I post in various forums !!!
You didn't give any explanation as to your answer- THAT'S why I'm asking.
Everything I'nm reading talks about not installing a whole room or house of flooring on particle board, but I'm trying to find out why this would be such a bad idea if glued ONLY over stairs ???

I"M TRYING TO LEARN SOMETHING AS A FIRST TIME HOMEOWNER !!!

Also, NOFMA and other resources are saying that part. board is not acceptable because because of "fastening holding power"
I'm NOT using fasteners- I want to glue- there's no info about gluing !!!

Some, and I mean only some, manufacturers say one can glue their products (floors) to particle board. I am sure they are refering to engineered. I don't recommend it but it may work. Here's why us pros are dubious of it. Particle board is weak, highly sensative to moisture and doesn't hold nails very well. When gluing to it, you only are bonding to the very top, which doesn't provide a strong bond. Look at it this way. You can do it ( I did not say should do it) and what is the worst that will happen. You'll have some squeeky stairs. Big deal. That won't be the first time stairs have been noisy. If removing the particle board is such a big deal for you and you don't want to do it, then don't. We are pros and would not proceed this way. You are not and therefore, you have much more flexability in the way you can go because you do not have to warrant the install.
