We are planning on replacing our engineered flooring, too beat up to sand down. We have had a few contractors come out. Most have told us that they need to tear up exsisting floor to lay down new solid wood. Had some one come in and say they can lay on top of exsisting. I have read conflicting info on other websites...curious what your opinions are?

I'm assuming your on a wood subfloor? If the existing engineered is over a wood subfloor, down tight, and the 3/4 solid will be run opposite direction....I don't see why not. To me it just acts as an extra layer of plywood over the subfloor. Over concrete I don't recommend it.

yes there is a subfloor eng. wood is glued down and the contractor was worried about damaging the subfloor trying to get the engineered up. This contractor is considerably less than other quotes, so I thought I would do a little research. Thanks for your help.

cicero2002 ,

Rule of thumb, you shouldn't install a wood floor over existing wood floor. But if they have reason to think the foundation will be damaged in the removal of your flooring- then in only that case, you should consider it and install in the opposite direction as posted earlier.

Never heard that rule. But then I follow that example when doing tile, even though the tile institute says it's OK.

With the engineered floor being glued down I would definitely use 2" staples or cleats to make sure you get enough grab into the subfloor. And as Howard said go in the opposite direction or you will have gapping all over the place.
