We're a small millwork shop that produces bespoke prefinished flooring. We are thinking about adding hickory to our line and would like you thoughts on the best stains and finished to use.

Since there is a natural color variation in hickory from sap to heartwood, I think that a brown stain looks nice, to help even the color out. A water-based stain will color hickory more since it is so hard. Some people like to see the natural variation in color I know, too. The light brown color will help anchor architecture making the floor seem more solid. You may want to try adding color to the first coat or two instead of stain, then protect the color with clear coats. A floor distributor in your area may know what your market prefers. They may be able to help!

We are on a Hickory job right now, engineered , about 8" wide wire brush, staining Bona Cocoa and traffic finish.
