Hello, would appreciate any ideas for how to work laying a Shaw engineered floating hickory floor around this raised hearth. The 'clips' are aluminum but hold the hearth together and I can't cut them, is the only solution to notch quarter rounds around them? TIA

Is the riser and aluminum structural, or cosmetic ?

Few options IMO.
1) If it's cosmetic, you can remove it , trim it the thickness of the floor, and re-install.
2) If structural, undercut it and use support wedges , until the plank is slid under. That aluminum will cut, may trash the undercut saw blade, ( or use a multi-function tool, or hack saw,on the aluminum).
3) Trim it out with matching quarter round, or base, ( not my choice...I think it will look funky at the corners). End Cap/Threshold, ( matching the floor), or t-moulding ripped in 1/2, may look o.k.

Definitely structural, the woodstove and its 20+ foot pipe rest on it.

We're considering all those options, we have matching T molding & quarter round. It may have to look 'funky' :)

How about refacing that with a matching wood, or like I have to do on some new kick plates is painted MDF or MDF then some matching veneer? Install floor, cover expansion gap and overlap floor with refacing?.

Wow, I think you've just solved our problem! We have 1/2" x 5" pine baseboard around the room, we could certainly create a 'frame' of it to place essentially like a picture frame under the base that would cover those clips completely. Thanks!! :)

There has to be more support under that raised hearth than the banner boards!

If it is a framed joist system under the hearth, I see no reason it could not be undercut.

Exactly, that's what I was thinking. I cant imagine that platform securely holding up that HEAVY wood stove without framed support under it :? Ofcoarse the sides would act as additional support, but the only support? Or at least some 2 by joists & cross members, and 2 bys behind the facia.

Most definitely it is not the only support! And what we finally decided to do is simply use quarter round and while some might think it 'funky', we are very happy with the result :) Thanks for the suggestions, it was nice to have options!

Definetly the easiest way out. Looks Ok but I don't like the hinges. HD or Lowes would so that
:P

Ouch!

Well considering we aren't pros like some of you and we live in an area where getting even Home Depot or Lowes to deliver much less install things is impossible, we had to diy or not at all.

I think managing 5 miters that came together perfectly - after many tries - is pretty good. :D

Thanks for not taking me seriously. Looks better than any flooring inspector could do. Paint it black, devil.
