Hello, We are putting in a new strand bamboo hardwood floor from our kitchen to a sun room. The rooms are divided by a granite fireplace that extended into the room. The edges are very irregular, so I get the wood cannot be cut to match all the irregularities. What is best to finish the gap between the hardwood planks and the granite? Grout or caulk? Or is there a better option?

How irregular are we talking? If you have the right tools you can get pretty far back. Caulking always looks ugly and can inhibit movement of the floor.

Is it like this one or worse?

I posted several images at the link above. The new floor has yet to be installed and will need to be scribed to fit the contours of the stone. There is no real undercut to the stone to allow the wood flooring to extend under. The subfloor has a 1/8" layer of masonite like sheeting on it.

The first thing that comes to mind is install your flooring close to the fireplace and then use a standard wood reducer against the fireplace to cover the edge.

Use an Undercut Saw with a Mason blade. 1 cut at the masonite, and 1 cut at the material thickness. Use a small crow bar, to break loose the chunk of stone.

How difficult is it to use an undercut saw to cut the stone. I am experienced working with circular saws, angle grinders and concrete saws. Also is it a power tool that most tool rental places would have?

I've never seen one in a rental store. Those saws are sort of a specialty item to our trade and a couple other trades. But as far as using one, it isn't very hard if you are good with power tools. But inside corners can be tricky.

I always frame the fireplace with the stock I'm using and if its irregular you scribe to the stone. You would be scribing a long board never butt ends. Snap a line that makes you square to the wall not the fire place and use that line to square up your scribe board. Put masking tape on your scribe board and scribe the stone. Use a scroll jig saw blade and back cut the board at about 15 degrees.

We use an undercut saw with a diamond blade and/or scribe to the stone and leave expansion elsewhere, but we have very dry climate and rarley have expansion.
