I just finished installing solid, pine-plank flooring and I want to continue the pine up the stairs which are now covered by carpet. There is only raw construction lumber under the carpet. How should I attack the stairs? Is there a "how-to" someplace the illustrates applying pine (or hardwood) to a raw stair case?

If the rough framed treads over hang the riser now, you will have to modify them. Either cut the overhang off or fill the riser out to meet the treads overhang, or a combination of both.

Other then that cut them tight, and use a sander to take off a little to make them fit, if needed.

Thanks for the response, I haven't removed the carpet but I don't believe the treads overhang the risers. I guess I can just install pine over the rough stuff. I'm thinking I could use 1/2 inch pine boards but I'm wondering about the lip or round-over or whatever it's called. I have a router that could probably take care of that. What do you advise?

You need to to determine what is underneath the carpet now... what is it, how thick, does it overhang?

I'm assuming you want to use the same flooring on the stairs with a nosing? I dislike changing the rise/run ratio on existing steps so we would need more information to go by.

Thanks, Jerry. . .
I'm getting a little ahead of myself. It will a couple of weeks before I can remove the carpet. I'll get back to you when I'm at that stage.
