Greetings. I'm looking at putting new hard woods in my home. I've been looking at options for a while. I really like the look of Acacia. It also appears to have a good hardness rating. What I can't seem to find is information on how much it darkens. We tend to use some area rugs so my wife is vetoing anything which darkens significantly *like most of the exotics*. Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

Acacia does change color quite a bit. You could help prevent this by adding some window tint to the windows. I belive 3M makes a tint for the windows of homes.

All wood darkens or lightens with age though direct sunlight is the blame for most of it, oxidation will cause this to happen also. The cherry and dark colors accentuate this condition. Carpet and any product with stains and dyes will have this happen. Generally this happens over a long period of time and only when one pulls back a rug is it usually apparent. In the case of hardwood if the rug is left off most cases in a years time they will blend in and not be noticeable. Brazilian cherry species name jatoba is the worst offender.

Thanks for all of the information.

I had found one web site which said that this specific species was actually on the more stable end. Although I do realize that all of them will darken to some degree.

The material is on order and received by my installed. I'll need to keep an eye on it. If it seems to be very apparent I'll convince my wife to rotate the room around on occasion.

Have been looking at acacia and curious, jay_fillion, how yours has aged? It looks like it's been a couple of years since you likely installed it, so I figured you'd be a great person to ask!
