Just wondering if a kitchen area can be screened and re-coated alone, without having to do the other 1400 sq. ft. downstairs that it connects to?????

It depends if there is a clean breaking point in the wood (e.g. a saddle, or edge piece of wood or wood changing directions.

If the wood flows into the next room wo/ a clean breaking point, you would either need to go into that room or add a saddle for a clean end point.

I would have to add that it doesn't need what Debbie talks about, or maybe she didn't word it properly? Similar to a change in direction of the floor. One can simply mask off a "transition" in the middle of a doorway by way of taping (safely) the area where it stops, then screen and coat. Takes patience and careful work near the "break" area.

No I think Debbie worded it ok..she meant a definitive stop.whether it be a change of direction, a header strip on an archway/doorway, or some sort of transition being a saddle, carpet edge etc.

to simply stop in a doorway/arch against the grain, tape or no tape is a no on.

there is always a risk of sheen change, but the variation will be less apparent and subtle under these circumstances.

we have actually taken the time on many occasions to to stencil of a pattern when we were forced to stip against a grain/directional pattern.

Literally taping of a stagger and coating into this...nothing is perfect but there is no can you or cant you answer to this. you fix what is wrong and the rest is is under compromise.
