I am DIYer and need some advice. My great room in 28' x 16'. The room appears to be very narrow and I would like it to appear wider. The floor will also be running length wise. I am assuming a lighter wood and finish will do the trick. But I am curious which sized plank width will help with this. I am looking a 3", 4", 5". I think 3" would be the best, but thought I should get an opinion from the experts.

Thanks in advance.

I've heard of paint being used for this effect. Paint the short walls a lighter shade of the same color as the dark walls. It give's the illusion of a wider room.
