Hello, just found this site and this is my first post.

We are building a new home and of course, every-time we turn around they are throwing 'optional" upgrades $$$$$$$$ to us.

We are having approx. 2400 sq. of engineered 5" plank flooring installed on a concrete slab (located in FL). Installation should be starting in about 10 days... and now the installer is "highly recommending" that we spend another $3,600 to have this Anderson "Duck Shield" moisture barrier applied. I know that they installed hardwood floors in a model home with out the this, so I wonder why they are pushing so hard now. Doesn't the concrete slab already have a vapor barrier under it? Is this just a way to get some extra money on an upgrade or are we foolish not to invest?

Thank you!

It seems to me that if this is a process that would be required for a successful installation it is not an option. An option is not even something that will give you piece of mind that the installation will be more likely to be effective. :?

That is what you hire a professional for. They are the insurance that the installation process will include the necessary steps to be taken to guarantee a successful outcome. 8)

Now on the other hand if the installer is recommending this process to mitigate a potential adverse jobsite condition. This is not really an "option". Your contract with your builder should cover this type of situation, I would hope.

It really isn't up to you if your concrete needs a moisture barrier or not. It is the professionals job to provide you with a job completed to standards.

It should not be given as an option. The concrete either needs it because moisture emission levels are near or above what is required. Or... it is not needed at all because the moisture vapor levels are way below the limit.

It sounds like the installer is winging it by the seat of his pants. He most likely doesn't know how or have the tools or time to test your concrete, to see if it meets the requirements. He is offering you to make that choice, so he can either make a buck, or when it fails, say" you didn't want the moisture barrier, so it is your fault... WRONG!!!!!!!
