Hi,

I wasn't originally considering mixed widths, however, the flooring I want has been discontinued and I can only find about 400 sq ft in 3 1/4 and 600 sq ft in 2 1/4 for my approx 1,000 sq ft area. I have seen mixed widths in wider planks and like the look, but I haven't seen it in narrower widths like this. How do you think this would look and how would it affect the complexity of the install and the labor cost? The product I am looking at is 3/4" solid maple in an ebony finish.

thanks,
oneam

It's not unusual to see the two mixed, it just comes down to personal preference. You can expect a higher labor charge, and maybe someone else can chime in on how much more.
I just wanted to point out that if you are going to do alternating rows, 60% of the floor will be 3 1/4, 40% 2 1/4. From what you said, you have 1000 s/f of material, but your percentages are reversed.....need to find some more 3 1/4!

you dont need any more if you change the rotation up and not do the alternating thing. You could do 21/4", 21/4" then a 31/4" that would work out for the footages you have. Another way woluld be to total random. which is easier for some than others, going completly random you just have to make sure as you go along that you dont run out of one of the widths way before you are finished. Just keep a tally as you go along making sure you are using enough of each.

Whew, was hoping I could get away w/o any add'l 3.25, because it is nowhere to be found. Thanks for your responses. If anyone can direct me to photos of such an install, I would be most appreciative :). I understand it's a matter of preference, but I'm not sure what my preferences are since I haven't seen this combo - I think it'll be fine, but want to be sure before I purchase. Anyone have any idea of the % more I might pay for this install? Is it difficult?

Several dealers I contacted who have it listed on their sites, as well as the mfr.

thanks

I am a somerset dealer as well and you are right that color was discontinued in their spring update. But, thats probally the most uncommon color thay had in the entire maple line. They still have a solid maple but they scaled down the colors to 3-4 from the 7 they had previously. You could probally still find some at a larger distributor in their older inventory.

Hi,

It seems to be uncommon in general - I can't really find a similar color in any brand, at least what I've researched w/in my budget. It was a perfect balance of red/deep brown. Everything else seems to be too red or too brown. I have looked at Somerset's other maple options, but they aren't quite what I am looking for. Actually their Maple Mahogany in the Country Collection seemed to be a good match, but it's also disc'd, though I've come across odd lots of it as well, I'm not sure I'm sold enough on the look of that wood to work it out, and the wider widths I've found it in require a more costly and complex install...

I spoke w/ a very helpful rep at Somerset that reviewed their dealer/distributor orders and found only the 400 sq. ft at one source, which I have now apparently stumbled across on my own. She said most of the orders were for specific jobs. Of course, if anyone knows of any in-stock inventory, please PM me - I would be most grateful!

(begging ) If anyone has any pics or input on the labor cost of the mixed widths please advise.

thanks!
oneam
