i'll be doing a hallway soon. however, at the end of the hallway is the original hardwood flooring. it's those old oak slats they used to use.

those slats are 3/8" thick on top of the sub floor and the boards we're laying down are 3/4" thick. so, i now have a 3/8" height difference when they meet.

so, in order to look the best, what should i do or use here?

wife wanted me to rip out 900 square feet of oak slats to keep the new floor level...yea right...she has a better chance of winning the lottery. so, i now need to make this height transition "professional" looking or forever hear a never ending complaint.

suggestions????????????????

thanks for all the suggestions.

however, i believe i figured out a way to do this with minimal interference: i'm going to use a reducer strip on the higher piece. then, the lower boards will slide under this about 1.5", but i'll plane them down the 3/8" on the ends. this allows the reducer strip to sit on top of them yet hiding the nose of the reducer below the surface. this will give no sharp edges, and the slight roll of the reducer strip won't be that noticable.

(you may use my idea) :)

Sorry we didn't get to your question. Your idea is what I would have suggested. Basically, use a reducer from the thicker floor down to the thinner floor. That's about all one can do.

Two of my best buddies died this week from cancer. Yesterday my only brother passed away. My heart is broken.

Next time just try bumping the thread up. :)
