As many jobs will show, each step will be different. This is especially true if a green price of lumber was used for the actual stringer construction. Even that becomes an acclimation thing as I've seen it numerous times. ie the stringer bows or twisted ever so slightly where a straight cut will show gaps, if we're looking at installing solid treads. With narrow plank on stairs, it's much easier to create a gap free job by scribing every board cut.
A good sized scrap piece works great as James was probably trying to say. Scribe each side with the scrap, cut, check for snug fit. Once it's good, get the measurement from each side of the step, transfer scribe lines and cut.
Or use a stair step scribe, though they will not help with bowed/warped stringers.
Here's a good source, though I much prefer a fat carpenters pencil for the scribing.
