As many jobs will show, each step will be different. This is especially true if a green price of lumber was used for the actual stringer construction. Even that becomes an acclimation thing as I've seen it numerous times. ie the stringer bows or twisted ever so slightly where a straight cut will show gaps, if we're looking at installing solid treads. With narrow plank on stairs, it's much easier to create a gap free job by scribing every board cut.

A good sized scrap piece works great as James was probably trying to say. Scribe each side with the scrap, cut, check for snug fit. Once it's good, get the measurement from each side of the step, transfer scribe lines and cut.

Or use a stair step scribe, though they will not help with bowed/warped stringers.

Here's a good source, though I much prefer a fat carpenters pencil for the scribing.

Thanks.also what's the true way to do the steps? Tread than riser? Or riser than tread?

You'll probably hear both ways, but I've always maintained building from bottom to top works best. Provides nice tight fits.

Here's a pictorial I did a few years back.

I read there that you use Festool. I am saving up to buy myself some. How is it?

Over the years I have used numerous methods to measure stair treads and risers. But I finally broke down and got a Stair Wizard, used. Best hundred bucks I ever spent. Last stair tread job I did every step and riser was different dimensions. Thank the Lord I had that tool or I would still be there.

Could you please give me run down on how to start measuring stringers. And just the different steps on completing them.
