I purchased all the material and hired professional installers for the hardwood. They also expressed experiise to install baseboard over the hardwood. The hardwood looks good but I am not satisfied with workmanship in 2 areas:

The link below has pictures of ahole left in my wall where the rail was removed when the hardwood was installed (when they tried to put the rail back, they made a hole and put the rail in a different place - the rail is not not straight). Also the baseboard is not smooth at the seems where two pieces of baseboard are joined. There is a 1 year workmanship warranty - I have complained and they do not feel they should have to fix this.

Any comments regarding the workmanship is appreciated. Am I wrong to want them to repair this? Is this how other installer professionals leave the work site? thanks

The baseboard would be a minor fix and if replacing the baseboard was their job, then it seems like they should fix it. The railing picture looks like there is no wood behind it. Is that true? If that is true then the railing was not properly secured to begin with and was destined to fail sooner or later. So, I'm not sure they should be responsible for that.

It doesn't matter. The job site should be as it was when they started. I had that happen (railing) to me once and I knew darned well I was responsible to fix it. Some people just don't accept responsibility.

Lousy base work. No mitered seam.

When I see work like that, it makes me feel ill, gives the trade a bad name. If they don't come out and make both those eysores right...I would file a complaint with the Contractors Board, and or, whatever other avenues to get their attention

I agree on the baseboard, very amateurish. With the railing If it wasn't installed correctly to start with I would fix it but if it was major work to do it right I would talk to the customer and let them know there might be an extra charge. I don't feel we as contractors should be responsible for prior crapsmanship that couldn't be seen.

What's up with the hole? Looks like they ripped it out of the wall. Then they leave the hole and install the rail crooked?

I see your point Jeff, if it's a costly situation. But most unforseen situations I just deal with, don't want to nickel and dime a customer. Plus it's the best PR around. The customer knows your going the extra mile, and it comes back around in referrals.
If these guys felt uncomfortable re-installing the rail for whatever reason, they should have figured a professional solution. Instead it looks like they ripped it out, hacked it back in, and left the homeowner with a hole  . To add insult to injury...Their washing their hands of it. This is a classic example why next time the homeowner will consider doing the work themselves. Seeing this kind of stuff..I don't blame them, it hurts us all.

I wouldn't just leave it. Depending on the extent of the repair I would either just fx it or explain the situation to the customer. Most of the time the customer would agree to pay the extra. It's one thing if it's just minor and I have supplies in my truck, but if I have to take the wall apart to put in a nailing block that's something else. And I just charge minimally for that just material and a little for my time.
