it's 8mm laminate. Been nailed down. Not by me.

I'm thinking of putting 3/4 hardwood over it using longer nails/staples (2inch)

Am I an idiot for even thinking this?

just when you though you have heard it all. Thats something ive never though about or encountered. Must have been one of the older glue up style laminates with traditional t&g.

It's laminate.

Tear it out eh? I know that's what I should but wondering what the drawbacks are for leaving it there.

So far I've heard either creaking down the road and possible expansion in laminate may mess up hardwood.

Not even going to discuss why not to rip it up, It will be worth the extra day to do it right.
