I started to refinish my floor but discovered quickly that it was a laminate installation. So, can I install hardwood over the laminate or will I have to remove the laminate flooring first?

Do you mean engineered hardwood or an actual laminate floor?

That's a good question. The floor is in my son's condo. When his roommate's father started to refinish, he told him he couldn't because it was laminate. I have looked at it and I am not sure if it is actual laminate or prefinished engineered hardwood. Is there a way to tell without removing boards? I have installed unfinished hardwood floors and bellawood in my own home, but I am not very knowledgeable about laminates or pre engineered. Thanks.

Engineered is like a piece of plywood, it's made out of real wood. Laminates such as Pergo not real wood it' basically a photograph of wood, usually over a MDF core.
