Hey there,

I'm a DIY'er and have recently installed ~400 sq. ft. of 3-1/4 wide oak (Somerset Brand). I started on one end of the house in MBR, continued thru a hallway and am now starting into a second bedroom. I have been careful to keep the install square.

Now that I am in the doorway of the second bedroom I measure and see that the floor is 1/2" off square.

It doesn't make sense because if I go back and check square in the MBR or hallway, it appears square.

How can I fix this problem?

Here is a link to 2 pictures of what I am describing - look at the white trim on each side and see how the wood is "off" square.

Thanks,

More than likely there is no problem there. It could be that the door casings were framed out of square and the rest of the layout is fine.

Ken - thanks for the reply. I appreciate your info.

Is there a way I can check the square other than how I've been doing it - (which is by measuring off the walls)?

I'm just afraid that as I move into the second bedroom (which is my stopping point) I could potentially get farther and farther out of square.

Any more advide you can give this newbie!!

Thanks a million :)

You can use cheater gaps to make up small amounts.

Dry lay into the room. Mark the edge of the board. Measure to the opposite wall. Go to the other side of the room and make the mark at the measurement. Then figure just what and where to cheat it.

a 1/64 gap in 64 boards, makes up an inch.

I have had to do it before to make up for the framing crews, drinking at lunch, and I think breakfast, too. They were off 3½"across the house. Glad it wasn't just one room.

THANKS Floor Guy!!

I was sure there must be was some "trick" the pros use to take care of this situation. I'm going to start working on the floor again tomorrow and we'll see what happens!

Thanks again!
