So here is the deal. We just bought my wife's great uncles house and found hardwood under the carpet. For the most part it's in great shape however the dining area looks like the varnish? Wax? Is completely warn away. Next summer we hope to refinish the whole thing but in the mean time what can I do? I can post up pictures if you would like to see.

Keep the floor dry. Use area rugs to cover the worn areas.
Take your shoes off and leave them at the door if they are wet.

Dang I was hoping I could do something to the floor. Could I varnish just that section?

The easiest thing to do would be to wipe on two coats of natural colored wood stain, wiping off the extra each time, with an overnight dry time. It will be easy to sand off when you refinish, but will seal the floor. Use Duraseal for best results.
You can use paste wax after if you start to get wear.
