Let me start from the beginning. I noticed some large very light scratches in my hardwood floor. I went online to do some research to see what I could find to fill in these scratches. So I googled around and found this product called FixIt from getitfixedwood.com. ( I don't mean to advertise like that, but maybe someone else with the same problem or someone who can help me can better understand my situation by knowing what I used. )

Okay I recieved FixIt Wood in the mail just the other day. It gives directions to either use light wood scratch remover or dark wood scratch remover. I used the light wood scratch remover because my hardwood floor is light wood. It says to spray in the area of the scratch, then wipe / buff away. As I wiped the light wood scratch remover away from the applied area, it not only took the scratch away, but it took part of my woods finish with it. Now I have patches of dull spots all over a 3' by 3' section of my living room. Here is my concern, I have no idea what kind of finish is on my hardwood flooring. I have herd of an oil based fix, wax based finish, polyurethane finish... and the list goes on. I went to "Lowes" today to find a solution, and I came home with "Bruce Fresh Finish Urethane top coat" liquid chemical that the guy who works in this departement told me this would work. I applied this to a small section of the dull area and nothing happened.

I need to know if there is a way to tell if my hardwood floor is a polyurethane finish, wax finish, oil finish, or this acrylic wax. I was told by the lowes guy that if I can put my finger nail in between the boards, it's neither wax or oil based finish. Is this true and if so, what else could it be and if someone has a solution to this problem, I would greatly appreciate all the help in which I can get.

Thanks allot,
Jeremy

This is when you need to hire a real pro to come over and see it first hand. I found a finish sticik at Lowes I use sometimes. I think Varethane makes it. Also, slight scratches are pretty normal. What made them...pets? Can you see them standing up and only in reflective light?

If you cannot see them in a standing position but only in reflective light your obsessing.

I had similar problems and ended up just calling the people who installed the flooring a couple years prior. They came over, and were happy to help in any way they could. Long story short, I was sort of obsessing and ending up just buying a product from Lowe's that this pro suggested and it looks fine. He did not think it was a big enough deal to do anything drastic.

wax finish= wipe with a white cloth with mineral spirts, if it comes up prretty clean its probally a polyurathane finish. Comes up real dirty and shiney its got some wax. Wax floors also will water spot easily, easy test is to drip some water wait ten minitues and if it leaves a white spot then chances are its wax. Wax hasent been used much for the last 20 years. If your floor is prefinished then most likely its a urathane finish. Keep in mind the best thing to do is to hire a pro.
