A hard wood will be better than a softer wood. Wood is classified with hardness values. One is the Janka hardness scale. This is the value in pounds that it takes to embed a .44" diameter steel ball bearing on half way into the wood. This ranges from about 500 for a fir floor to 3650 for strand bamboo. The high American hardwood used for flooring is Hickory around 1600-1700, as I remember. What is important about flooring is the finish that is used to protect the surface. A two part water-based poly-urethane is the most resistant to wear according to some wear tests.
