Hello All,
I am going to hardwood the second floor.
After removing the carpet we noticed that the the hardwood will be higher than the starecase as you can see in these images.

One solution is to raise the starecase which is very costly.
One other solution is to hardwood just like what the images are showing which is not looking nice.
Any other ideas would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Al

Possibly you can come up with some sort of trim that matches the spindle plate, that will work. Or...you can use reducer transition, to match the floor, ( thickness of the hardwood, and taper down to the plate). Maybe you could even use a thinner reducer, and run it over the top edge of the plate. I kinda like the first suggestion, if possible,( it's amaizing the variety of Red Oak trims that are available). Not sold on how great a reducer would look.

Can't you pull the railing and bring it up with some ply?

May be Howard. I can't see it good enough. But then, it has to come one one way or the other or it will look like poo. Trim under the spindle plate to hise the ply, like quarter round maybe?

Maybe they can raise the spindle plate, and trim out where it's higher on the skirt and drywall. But we also don't know what happens with the rail....maybe it's all connected, and going down the staircase?

If you haven't already bought the material get something thinner.

Thanks all for the responses. I hsave already purchased the materials. Stairecase rails are all connected to each other and to the wall. It seems to be too costly to raise them and make the floor even with the stairecase nosing.

If there was carpet, then maybe there is a second layer of sub floor (luan) or whatever that needs to be taken up . If so, the first layer of plywood would be in the right spot to accept the new flooring.

Hi,
Yes, there are two layers of playwood. However, the thikness of the second layer (top layer) is about 1/2 inch while we only need 1/4 of inch.
Also the whole second floor is like that.
I think it would be much cheaper and probably better if we just raise the starecase and railing.
The lowest bid that I have for doing this is 500$ which is better than what I was initially had (%1500).
I have about 10 meters of railing that need to be raised up for 1/4 inch.
Thanks for all the answers.
