Just curious if people normally continue hardwood into their closets. We're going to be building a new house and I'm debating the hardwood in closets. On one hand, no transition pieces. On the other, do we really need it in the closets?

Here's the layout. Everything will be hardwood except the kitchen, bathrooms, and utility room. Opinions on flooring for the closets?

Jethro, you can do anything you want. :-)

All kidding aside, unless you're going for the redneck look, I think it would look awful. Just my opinion.

Well, I've seen it all so nothing surprises me. Options are:
1) hardwood the closets with the same material as the rest of the house.
2) Use cedar. I have done this many times. Not durable but fine for a closet floor.
3) Carpet them. Downside? You have carpet nowhere else so it looks cheap and sorta tacky.

Not to jack this thread, but I am installing 3/4" solid tigerwood through out my 1st level except the powder room, kitchen, and the front entry closet. The foyer is currently solid oak with the closet as carpet. There's a crawlspace hatch in this closet (panel with a handle). I had planned on just leaving it as carpeting, as I wasn't sure how to do this area otherwise. But these recommendations has got me wondering. Any suggestions?

The sign of a quality hardwood installer is when they don't balk at the idea of doing a trap door. I've done them many ways. Made them fancy with recessed pulls and done them so you could hardly see them. Now, my fav is to "disguise" them so they don't stand out. No pulls or latches, graining flows from floor to door. All you can see is the small 1/8" cut around the door itself.
But about your foyer. If you're not changing the flooring, don't worry about it unless you want to switch that carpet out for cedar. That would be a nice touch.
