Hey all,
Great forum. Hoping for some advice.
I just pulled up a carpet in a room that has a concrete floor at ground level (welcome to California). I knew (and had tested prior) that there are vinyl tiles under this carpeting and likely glued to the concrete. These tiles contain 15% asbestos (type: Chrysotile) according to testing.
The plan was to lay OSB over the vat creating a floating substrate and then nail down the hardwood over that.
My concerns grow each step in the process though. The layer of tiles is a bit uneven, and both he padding under the carpet and my common senses tell me there is a bit of a moisture problem. Not soaking, but not dry.
I've considered using a self leveling concrete over the tiles to fill in the uneven tiles (the carpet pad was glued to it and one or two tiles came up) and then using #15 tar paper, then the OSB, then the flooring.
Does this plan make sense? There is no way I am removing the tiles. All the advice I have been given to this point says not to. Or any better solutions for laying this flooring down in this room?
Thanks!!
