Hi all

Needs some advice or tips. I've got a job coming up installing 2 1/4" prefinished hardwood in a second floor hallway. In the majority of the area the hardwood will be butting up against curved stairnosing on which the railings are installed.

Anyone have any tips on quick and accurate ways to profile against the curved stairnosing?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

There's different methods for different situations, and different installers use different methods. Most of the time I use a pair of Dividers with pins on both legs, and scribe my line. Then I'll follow the line with a sharp utility knife, before cutting. But really depends on the situation for me... how the planks hit that area.

I did try something new a while back. I had a 12' stone radius to tight fit. I picked up a 2' Flexible Rule at a Drafting supply place. First I aligned the planks for layout straightness and penciled a rough radius on the planks within 1/2" of the stone, then cut the planks. I then layed the planks back in place up against the stone with the Flexible Rule on top, and marked the exact radius. It fit great. I had to cut twice, but it actually went pretty quick.

Done it many ways. Depends if the are going to but to it or on the length.

I will template if it is very trick, but usually a washer with a small hole and my pen makes a very accurate mark.
Dry lay it all up before attaching.
