I just finished laying 450 sq. ft. of antique white oak in our kitchen. Now patching, preparing for sanding. I am finding grease spots here and there, even though I had paper over the whole floor, the result of continuing to use the kitchen during the installation. Is there any way to get the grease spots out? Worst one is where a fragment of a Brazil nut got dropped, got kicked under the paper, then mashed into my beautiful but unprotected floor.
Thanks,
akgreen

They should sand out. Really not much different than refinishing a floor that's been stained.

Something similar happened to me once on a granite table top. I put some bentonite powder on it (available at healthfood stores), then put a piece of paper and weights on top of that. Bentonite absorbs oil/liquid, and it really did help a lot. If you haven't already sanded, you might try it before you sand to get as much "up" as you can.

Hope this helps.

It seems Gary was right - they did sand out. No grease spot left. I am drying the sealer coat as I write this. Here is a question - the instructions on the sealer say to abrade this coat, then vacuum, then wipe down with moist "tack". What the heck is tack?
Thanks.

Clean lint free cloth, dampened with water.
Old tee shirts and / or old towels work well. Reason I say old is because all the lint has been washed out of them over time.
Alternately, you can buy tack cloths specifically designed for the job; but why not invest in new tee shirts to replace the ones you use on the clean-up?

Thanks - "tack" explained. I have plenty of "tack". I had planned to apply 1 coat of sealer and two coats of Streetshoe(tm) urethane to this floor, but after applying the sealer coat I have a little less than 1/2 of the sealer left. On the theory that the 2d coat will spread farther than the 1st and that 2 coats are better than 1, I am planning on abrading, tacking, and then applying a second coat of the sealer. If this is a very bad idea, tell me quick!
Thanks!

What kind of sealer? Some can be double coated some, not.
BTW, I think im the only real fan of Street-Shoe here. Way to go on your finish choice!!! :D

The sealer is a BasicCoatings sealer, but for better or worse, I applied the second coat and its dried, sanded, tacked, and the 1st coat of Streetshoe is on. I'm sanding, and tacking that this morning, and will apply 2d coat. It looks like I may have enough for a 3d coat. Any pros or cons on applying a 3d coat?
Thanks

Really not much to be gained by putting on a 5th coat, but if you got it, and all lower coats are fully hardened, you could do it without harming anything. What type of applicator are you using? And did you catalyze the street-shoe? properly, as per instructions?

I'm using the 18" round applicator for the big areas, and a small pad-type applicator for corners, baseboards, etc.
How long do I need to wait for "Fully hardened"?

Well perhaps I should clarify myself. Fully hardened takes 28 days, but thats not what I meant to say. If you can wait 48 hours, and the surface of the finish powders when you rub it with your buffing paper, you should be all right. Using the 18 inch applicator with a heavy pole, you are probably getting about 700 - 800 sq. ft. of coverage per gallon so you should be OK with that additional coat you want to put on.

I'm discouraged. After applying 1st coat I have streak marks, marks where two sections overlap, drips, brush marks, and places I just missed. I'm trying to sand out the drips, which requires me pretty much to go down to the bare wood again. Oh well, its my own floor.

Ya well Street-Shoe is not the most user friendly product in the world.
You must keep a wet edge on the finish to avoid lap marks, adding a couple ounces of water per gallon will help avoid streaks, and you shouldnt be lifting the applicator, thats where your drip marks are coming from.
Proper lay down of a coat of street-shoe is best done using a watering can to run a bead of finish down the length of the room then draw it out with the applicator.
Dont get discouraged, the next coat will look better if you follow these suggestions.
