Is it possible to go over the top of VCT tile with 3/4 oak? I tried to nail down a few "practice" boards and the nails seem to penetrate well but when a board is pulled up some of the tile usually comes up with it because it is pretty brittle. The tile is sitting on 3/4 plywood and obviously glued down. So, is it possible to go over the top or would it be better to tear up everything and start new? I'm assuming that if I tear up the tile the plywood would need replaced as well since its covered with some nasty adhesive. Thanks for the help.

Best to remove the VCT. Otherwise your going to have a bunch of busted up VCT pieces under the hardwood. You should be able to install over the 3/4"plywood.
