Today was my first day of attempting a glue-down installation of my floors. When it came time to stop for the day there was still a row of adhesive on the floor, but not enough to fit another row of planks. I used the trowel to scrape the adhesive off of the floor as best I could, but I'm pretty sure there is adhesive on the underside of the tongues of the last laid row. And, if this is the case, that'll mean that they won't fit into the next row's groove.

First, would it be a better idea to use a utility knife to cut off the adhesive from the tongues of the last row, or to cut the bottom groove edges from the next row of planks?

I'd really like to avoid this problem in the future and I've never seen it discussed in how-to videos, but how do the pros handle stopping a glue-down installation for the day? Do they simply trowel the adhesive the exact width of the boards, or just slightly less to ensure it doesn't ooze out and up when the board is pressed into place?

XSleeper got it right in so far as taking care of your problem with the scrap board. As far as spreading, most guys will measure a control area for the glue and create a chalk line.

Example: Ten boards multiplied by 3 inch width equals 30 inches. Adhesive is then spread to about 3/8" away from the line.

I'm getting the impression most people would rather watch a video on subjects like that. After all, reading is hard, isn't it? Be patient grasshoppers, hardwoodfloorTV is coming. The homepage will look quite different in 3-4 months.

I do it the same way Ken decsribed and xsleeper. However you must be careful and make certain the floor is glued all the way to the edge or else moisture may get in if the slab is not totally covered with adhesive.

I also use multiple scraps at the end joints and along the whole row, nailed down to keep the wood elevated which is especially essential with these new all in one adhesives or they can sag down leaving a tilted row. This also prevents slippage. There is nothing more aggravating than to come back the next day and find a board or two that have moved. Tearing out glued boards is just no fun.

Thanks for help, guys.

I've been cutting away at the adhesive under the tongue all afternoon and when I dry fit the new row they don't fit tight enough. Should I keep cutting away or cut the bottom edge of the grooved side if the next row?
