Hello,

I am new to hardwood flooring and have a newbie question. Our dining room chairs have manufacturer-attached small (about 3/4 inch diameter) plastic disks on the bottoms of the legs. My question is, are these plastic disks suitable for protecting our hardwood floor against scratches from the chairs moving in and out around the table, or do we need to replace these with felt protectors? I am concerned about damaging the chair legs by trying to pull these plastic protectors out, so if they are designed to protect hardwood, I would like to leave them alone.

Thanks for your advice,
Jill

In short, no, the plastic buttons will damage your floors. Get these instead.

Does it have to be those particular kind? Or can I get the kind of felt feet that are down at Home Depot? I thought I "heard" that these felt pads can trap sand/dirt, and scratch the floor?

What's the story here...:)

Dave,
The plastic buttons will damage your floors.
Felt pads soil, and need to be changed. The soil scratches the floor;;; not the felt.

I too recently got hardwood floors and although I put felt on the feet of the dining room chairs, the felt crumpled and now I have scuff marks on the floor. My floor is Brazilian Cherry which was finished at the house - with some kind of water based stuff - not polyurethane. Was that a mistake? How do I get rid of the scuff marks? My floors get a lot of use since they're in a vacation home and there are children there most of the time.

Jeri, are the chair legs sitting completely flat on the floor? Most chair legs are angled out and so are the feet... in situations like that the chair leg bottoms should be trimmed off flat

I put felt on the bottoms of my chairs and as a previous writer stated, the dirt and grit that stuck to the felt was what scratched my floor...not the chairs. Now once a month or so, my 8 year old daughter and I make a little project out of changing the felt. Hopefully that will help.

I went to home depot / lowes, and for 5 bucks you can get an assortment of felt protectors that will work fine. That's what I'm using.

I've gotten new felt pads for the chairs, but now I can't get the scuff marks off the floor. I've cleaned them with Bruce cleaner, but the marks are still there. And ideas?

Same way you get scuff marks out of your car or trucks finish.

I'm kind of laughing right about now, because I have no idea how you get scuff marks off of your car or truck! The most I do is wash and vacuum my car. Could you tell me how to do it? Thanks.

And what if they're not scuffs, but scratches - what do I do then?

If they won't buff out with compound and ploish, then you must repaint.

I actually put rugs under heavy furniture to protect the floors. It actually helps a lot.

Hi...,Nice thread.I also faced that problem few months ago.And used plastic disks for protecting hardwood floor against scratches from the chairs moving in and out around the table. Those are suitable rather than replace.
