My friend is putting hickory flooring down, the installers said in order to make the top riser at the top of the stairs fit flush with the existing trim on the staircase they had to use two pieces of wood and trim the ends to fit it. Her husband is not happy saying that top tread edge will over time have issues. They have 11children and that place will receive loads of traffic, is it best to remove the two pieces and put one solid floor board down that will notlook fitted but offer more stability than having a cut right down the middle of the riser?
