I'm gluing down 3/8" engineered Hickory (Shaw, Pebble Hill) throughout my house in Houston, TX. I've undercut my hearth, intending to frame it. Do the miters at the corners of the frame need to be routed or can they simply be re-beveled and butt jointed? Are there unpleasant consequences to butt-jointing? Is the aesthetic negatively affected?

Has a tendency not to sit flat and pretty like you want.

Thanks, Kevin. Since I don't have a router / table I'll scratch framing the hearth and just run underneath.
