Many products are beveled on all four sides. Would there evey be an instance where a cut board would end up in the middle of the floor, thereby creating a "sock-catcher" edge? Is there more waste with a four-side beveled product due to planning for end cuts only?

No, there would not be a reason for a cut board to be out in the field of theinstallation.

No, no extra waste at all. The normal 5%, unless you have to cull many, many bad baoards.

if you have to replace a board in the field you can round over the edge by rolling the side of a screwdriver against the edge, of course you might have to touch up the end with stain if neccesary.

Simple and brilliant idea Kevin. I never thought of that.

Never tried that before.

Did a 2 board replacement last week, on some BR-111, where he slide his mattress down the hall, on a towel and it pulled a huge splinter on 2 boards.

I use my razor knife and wittled/shaved the bevel back on the boards.

I've used a file, a rasp, a table saw, a block plane, a utility knife, and sandpaper to makes bevels. But never thought of a screwdriver! This I'll hafta try!

Its fine for end joints not neccesaryly the way to go if you are trying to do the long side of the board. Figured it out when i was trying to frame in a hearth and the 45s looked odd because the were square cuts and there was my screwdriver laying on top of the hearth sometimes you have to play the card that was delt to you.
