Hi, we're pulled up the old carpet and sheet vinyl in our 60's ranch house, and we have bamboo flooring to install (nail down).

The problem is that we discovered asbestos tile under a lot of the flooring - in the kitchen (not surprising), the family room, and all the bedrooms. That's about 2/3 of the total floor area of the house. It's all attached directly to the plywood subfloors.

The subfloors are in great condition - 1" thick ply (at least, it's seriously beefy!), and very level. The asbestos tiles, however, don't appear to be in great condition. They seem quite brittle - a few are cracked, and it seems like nailing through them would cause more to crack.

We'd like to avoid removing them, if possible. Our first thought was to just floor over them (lay down tar felt to level out the floors where there isn't asbestos tile, and then lay aquabar over everything as the moisture barrier). However, would that cause us any problems with our floor stability/squeaking/other if the tiles crack or loosen as we nail into them? Should we put more underlayment than just the aquabar? Our flooring is 5/8", if that matters.

Thanks!

Never mind :)...

My husband experimented and discovered that these tiles are actually coming up fairly easily, so he's taking them out (in a previous experience we had with asbestos tiles, they were adhered so strongly it was he$$ to get them out). So we'll just remove the tiles, then the aquabar and flooring.

Make sure you are wearing proper protection while removing these tiles. Not just a nuisance mask, and vacuum vacuum vacuum during the removal process.

We absolutely are, thanks Dennis - we took out the asbestos popcorn ceiling as the first step with this house, so we have the professional grade full face abatement respirator, and we'll be wet mopping the floors after tile removal.
