Hi everyone,
I just hired a contracor to refinish my hardwood floors. Im not certain as to how old the floors are but they are 2 inch wide red oak boards instead of the traditional 2 1/4 inch boards. I pointed out that in the floor vents you can visibly see there is only about 1/8 inch of wear left on the top layer.
The contractor placed a business card in the cracks of the wood in random areas and marked it with a pencil to check how much life the floor has left and found it has roughly
3/16-1/8 inch of life left. He said the floor is flat enough to refinish. And that his machines only take off approximately 1/32 of the floors life.
My concern is that what if he is wrong and he sands thru? And there are very large cracks in the long seams of the wood. The contractor says he will apply stainable wood filler on the whole floor and it is a result of lack of humidity?
Thanks for any responses

Sounds like your contractor knows what he is doing .Keep in mind that most fillers will crack over time . They usually aren't a permanent solution for large gaps. The only way to prevent gaps is to constantly maintain a stable RH in the home , above and below your flooring.
