Hello,

I work for a manufacturer of wood products and we manufacture floor spline. In the past we exclusively used Red Oak off fall to make our floor spline. We were informed by someone that they preferred to use Poplar as a floor spline because it was softer and easier to work with. We have since switched to making both Oak and Poplar spline because as our customers needs changed we had an abundance of Poplar off fall. Have any of you used both types of floor spline? If you have which do you prefer? I wanted to have some feedback to see what actually works the best and make sure we are not going down the wrong path with our customers.

Thanks,
Chris

We have sold both, The poplar will swell a little more but its easier to beat in if its tight. I like the oak as long as it doesnt get oversized.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your response. That is very helpful. We are currently having supply problems because we are having less off-fall to process. ( Our yield has been getting better which is not necessarily a bad thing ) Would there be any reason why an installer would not be able to use floor spline that was mixed species? ie. Maple, Oak, Poplar, Cherry, or Walnut.

Regards,
Chris
