I have a family room approx 20 X 37 that was added on as an addition. My problem is a small area, about 11 X 6 is part of the existing house and the floor joists are running the opposite way as the new part. My question is what can I do under that section to insure a solid install. I am using 5" hickory and 2" staples

We just had this subject come up a couple of weeks ago.

What you'll want to do is remove the subfloor in the small area where the joists run parallel to the direction you want to run the flooring. Then you can install 2 x 6 blocking every 16" between the joists. Then re-install your subflooring. Now, IF you have a basement or can get to those joists without having to remove the subfloor, even better. Of course, you can also add an additional layer of plywood. Or lay the flooring on a diagonal. These will work as well. Your choice. None are better than the other in terms of structural solidity.

Gary,

Thanks. I did find that thread but I had already posted. It is over a crawl space so I will be going onder to install the blocks. Thanks again for the reply.
