I'm glueing down a 9/16" engineered to the concrete over the weekend and once thats done will replace the furniture. Problem is, this furniture is book shelves and will be placed on opposite sides of the room (and over-filled with books). 88" tall, 5-6 shelves of books.

My question is, will the floor still be able to expand and contract over the years with such heavy furniture which would seem to pin down the planks underneath?

I wouldn't worry about engineered moving that much, maybe if it was a floater.
