A neighbor said we could put in floating floor over carpeted floors. I thought that was very strange after reading information on your website about floating floors. Our house is built on a raised foundation. We live in the high sierra desert region. There's quite a range in temperature but it is basically a dry climate. We use a swamp cooler in summer months so that changes the humidity considerably. We wanted to insulate the home more both for noise (we get a echo sound throught out) as well as for keeping home warmer in winter. What do you say about what a neighbor suggested and what would you suggest considering our situation? Thank you.

Remove the carpet. Flooring installed over carpet does not fair well, have seen it several times were someone installed over carpet and the floor moves and works apart. Seen it with both locking and glue together application.

When floating laminate first came out they allowed you to go over a thin glued down comnmercial carpet. Then they stopped for obvious reasons Mickey mentioned.

The only manufactuer I know that allows a double underlayment is Quickstep. And you must use their underlayments. The first one down is a rigid foil/foam underlayment, then the roll type over that. I did one so far and it felt OK.

No carpet is allowed under floating floors, period.

Definitely remove the carpet. The floor will feel much more solid when installed.

Just want to say thank all of you for helping me avoid a waste of time, labor and money! So, any ideas what I can do to insulate and reduce sound without going into changing the floor ? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, if I want to leave the carpet on the floors is there another good alternative to reduce echo and add insulation? Would I have to go under the house and apply something? Thanks for your patience.
