Hello all, and thanks in advance for your help.

We have installed 2000 ft of quarter/rift sawn white oak in 3, 4 and 5 inch random. We had rubio monocoat 5% white applied after sanding. Before sanding, the wood crew laid the entire floor with a pinkish substance they identified as wood filler as we have a decent amount of knots (on purpose).

I asked them how they intended to handle the "flesh color" knots and they said they would take on the stain. I told them we aren't staining, and now that I see the finished floor, it's stunning, except all the flesh colored knots.

How do I go back and rectify this? I'm worried that the oil will prevent penetration now, but there has to be something I can do. Can I spot stain the knots?

Kathy

to do that would be a noightmare..but anything is possible if you have the patience.

you cpould get black or brown Rubio..lightly sand those areas and paint in with the darker oil.

you could use black sharpee

or lastly..chip it all out and use color putty.

or sand everything again and use a toned color so the fill will take the color.

not many options..

In hindsight it would have behoved the installers to make some sample boards for you with knots. And they didn't know you were not going to stain? Hows that? Lack of communication or something.

Thats a real nice project. Id be willing to guess it's near the 30k mark. Its hard for me to believe on such a high end project that a mock up sample was never made before the project ever even got off the ground.
