We moved in a house and pulled up the carpet to find beautiful Oak hardwood floors. Overall they are in good condition. I believe the finish is a bit thin, but it should be good for a couple years I far as I can tell. Can anyone give me tips to find out what type of finish is on these floors? I hope its Urethane.

Main issue. There are certain spots where at first I thought it was some kind of glue gunk stuck on top of the finish but now I am starting to believe its the actual finish itself that is flaking and coming off. I will attach pictures for you guys to see. Any help is appreciated as to what I should do. I cleaned the floors with a rag and light mineral spirits and plan on buying Bona kit to hopefully clean and shine them up a bit more. Eventually a couple years down the road we will have them professionally done. Anyone know what the flaking is from and how I can fix it without sanding it prevent it from happening?

Here are pics of the overall floor condition:

I will have to post the other pics in a seperate post since the max links is 4.

looks like its peeling off to me. Its what happens when the floorhas been covered by a rug its whole life. It will need to be sanded back down to bare wood and refinished. The floors still look like they are in good shape just need to be refinished.

Regardless of the cause of the finish failing, theer is nothing you can apply on top of this problem that will make it go away. The intercoat adhesion is coat to coat, so while your new finish MAY stick well, it will only stick as well as the coat below it, which is failing.
