About a year ago, we had our white oak hardwood floors (1000 sq ft) refinished with a Satin finish polyurethane. This week we had to replace a portion of our floor (about 60 sq ft).

PROBLEM #1:
Instead of just polyurethaning (oil based Satin finish) the new portion of the floor, the contractor kept going and covered a very large area surrounding the new floor... and did a horrible, horrible, horrible job.

He used a lambswool brush that left very evident streaks and lumps. It looks awful. Especially compared with the surrounding floor that was beautifully refinished.

Question 1: Is there a simple solution to fix this without restripping and refinishing the entire floor? Can the lumpy poly layer be buffed down to a flat finish? Can another layer be properly applied over the screwed up layer to correct the problem?

Question 2: The new section of the floor is very far off from matching the old floor. We knew this was a possibility, but the contractor ignored my suggestion to pull up some of the adjoining boards and mix them up to create a smoother transition. Now the difference between the two sections is glaring. Can I apply a tinted oil based Satin polyurethane over the 2 clear coats of oil based Satin polyurethane to make the floor look more even?

I am holding the contractor accountable for correcting these problems, but, at this point, don't trust him to have the proper solutions.

Thanks,

Dave

Hire a Professional.
He can blend it in.
The balance of the installation may need to be screened or sanded then recoated...
Hopefully, screening the "existing" area will be all that is needed...
