Hello,
I was trying to continue a hardwood floor into a kitchen renovation, turns out the wood would be too hard to obtain or make/mill (5/16 x 1 5/16), so the decision has been to rip it all up and replace it. And, I have decided to try installing it myself. I have purchased 3/4 x 3 5/8 Mahogany.
I have two questions:
First, I have decided to start the work from my fireplace, as I thought picture framing the hearth would be the primary focus of the room. When framing the hearth, I assume on mitering the joints. There is a long piece that makes up the head of the hearth, and then the two side pieces. On the side pieces I assume I will have to route a groove along the outside edge, in which the intersecting floor boards will have to connect or meet the side piece. My question is, all the edge pieces have a micro-bevel, but when the intersecting boards meet the side board, there will not be a bevel. Should there be one? Is this over-kill? Of course I would have to stain the bevel if I made one, etc... but I am thinking I am over-thinking the whole process.
Second, If I start from the fireplace, I have to work my self backwards to the other side of the room. On the other side, there is a downwards staircase. I bought the stair nose to make this transition, but I am concerned about calculating the distance to the stair edge, and how and what I would do when I meet there. I assume the stair nose is like 3 5/8", plus the round over for the bullnose. What if the nose is too short, do I just rip it to fit. Again, what about the bevel, stain, etc...
I am sure that I am over thinking a lot of these steps, and what I do where and when, but I am trying to walk myself through this mentally before I decide to tackle it.
Thanks,
