Hi there I'm new to this board, and I have a question about a fir floor I just installed in my house remodel project.
I know It's not hardwood ,but I didnt know where else to get my questions answered.
the material was stored in a dry garage for 5 years then stored on the same floor it was installed in for 8 months
its nice cvg and some flat grain fir all 12' lengths ,very nice stuff,
I installed it myself [1st timer] and it turned out very nice
although there was some narrow grooves between the boards
I used a flooring air nailer cut nails nailed every 6 "
spent a lot of extra time getting it as tight as possible
however due to the variance in milling there is some narrow spaces as i said before.
I farmed out the finishing job, because I wanted a super nice result
the guys belt floor sanded it with 40 grit troweled on a coat of filler
belt sanded with 60 ,120 then screen 120
stained then
Glitza gold seal
screened
1 more coat Glitza goldseal,220 screen, thenGlitza lite scent
but I still have voids between the boards,to me it
looks like the filler was not applied correctly,it was a product the guy thinned with water and completly coated the floor with a trowel
I dont know the brand on this one
should I expect no open seams on a floor like this?
I thought at least at first it would be sealed and may open up over time as the wood shrank
also some of the flooring was down for a month before finishing
sorry for the long windedness
thanks in advance
Bruce

If the relative humidity levels in the home fall below 30% you may experience gaps. This generally occurs during the winter heating system.
Cold air heated can dramatically lower the relative humidity in your home. If it falls below 30% expect some gapping. The lower the humidity the more the wood will shrink and cause gaps. All mfgs state 30 to 50% some even more. The reason wood starts to shrink after 25%. If you purchase a decent hygrometer and notice this happening get a humidifier. They don't cost that much and you will not have to jack the thermostat higher as humidity in the air makes it feel warmer. Also you won't have stuffed up noses and scratchy throats as much either.
