I have a unique floor that is looking it's age. It's at least a 50 year old oak floor that was laid with parquet with each square in an opposite direction. The squares have 2 stain colors and are uniform in the color scheme throughout the house (light oak and darker walnut stain). The floor is too unique to sand down to bare wood as the 2 stains would take years to get back to original. The old poly has long since worn off the high traffic areas and this those spots have lighter stains and/or a light white haze. My idea is to poly over the existing stain in hopes of the poly darkening the stain a little and hopefully not noticing the flaws with an appropriate poly (satin, semi gloss?). Is there a product that I can apply to the stain now to clean the wood and/or restore the stains to prepare for the poly? They are just too unique to change.
Thoughts?
Thanks for the help!
