I am putting a floor down in my kitchen and living room. There is a slider off of the kitchen that the floor boards will be perpendicular to. I was thinking of a way to finish the edge against the slider without having to buy a reducer or other trim piece. I came up with taking a board and putting a quarter round on one side and routing out half of the bottom on the other side, like a reducer. Then I would route the ends of the boards perpendicular to the slider so that the parallel piece would sit flush with the top of the floor. Assuming I can get the cuts straight, is there any problem with doing something like this? I have tried it out on some scrap pieces and I think it looks pretty good.

Is the wood unfinished ? If it's prefinished and or stained it may be fun matching the finish and or stain. Other than that, no problem with doing something like that. Typically I just scribe fit the slider.

Thanks, Floorologist.
Well, it's utility grade hickory, so there is a large color variation anyway, so I wasn't too concerned with matching color. What do you mean by scribe cut?

If you want you may be able just to turn a board in front of the slider threshold and work off it to keep it all tight and neat. depends on the hight of the slider i guess.

"Scribe fit", it's a method used when tight fitting, usually with a square, or a pair of dividers (a compass ).
Out here most outside doors ie: sliders , frenchdoors, have thresholds that I can scribe fit. Even if it means cutting the underneath side of the plank on a 45 degree, ( if the threshold is tapered ). Just a matter of taste, I think it's a clean look.
