50 yr old red oak PARQUET floors stripped, sanded to 150 grit and then used oil based stain. Then put one very light coat (1/2 of 1 quart on about 350 sq feet) of 2 lb Zinsser shellac (wiped on) on it. Was going to use this as sanding sealer followed by Bonakemi Traffic. However the floors look stunning! My questions: how durable is shellac compared to a water based polyurethane (don't want oil as I don't want it to amber over time)? 1/4, 1/2 ?How durable is shellac compared to Bonakemi Traffic? 1/4, 1/2? I like the idea of shellac because it is easy to fix a scratch compared to polyurethane or Bonakemi Traffic. If you recommend a water based polyurethane -what brand? If you recommend to continue with shellac what grit would you use to sand between coats and how many coats - 4 or 5? Also how does one remove Bonakemi Traffic when it comes time to redo the floors?

Sincerely appreciate any recommendations! Thanks!

Shellac is a fantastic looking finish. However, it is a very poor floor finish by itself. Even when used as such many, many years ago (think 1920's), it was still waxed after that. So, I would go with your original plan and apply 2 coats of Bona Traffic over the shellac. One concern I have is that most shellac has WAX in it, which prevents some finishes from bonding well to it. So I would lightly sand (with 220) the floors, then apply a wax free shellac over that. Use Zinser's Seal Coat. After ample dry time, then apply two coats of Bona Traffic. You will have a VERY durable finish. There is no floor finish more durable than Traffic. OR, if you want a high maintainence floor, then just paste wax with Trewax. I wouldn't even try living on a shellac finished floor. You'll walk it right off. As to removing Traffic when it comes time to redo, you don't! Just buff and clean well and apply another coat!
